01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Strolling along the streets of Yanaka, the storefront of Yanaka Fukumaru Manju easily catches the eye with rows of diminutive, attractive sweets. Modest pricing makes it tempting to pick up one or two treats on a whim as you explore the neighbourhood.
One of the signatures is the karinto manju, prized for its pleasantly crisp, deep-fried exterior and toasty aroma. The shell pairs smoothly with the sweet bean paste inside, and you can also opt for a sweet potato version filled with smooth imo-an. By contrast, the classic brown sugar manju features a tender, chewy skin wrapped around elegantly sweet smooth red bean paste; its bite-sized shape makes it effortless to share among family and friends.
Beyond steamed buns, the shop draws praise for its butter dorayaki, sandwiching sweet bean paste and rich butter between fluffy, tender pancakes. A touch of salt from the butter sharpens the bean paste's sweetness, making it remarkably easy to reach for a second. The counter also features custard manju filled with smooth cream, lightly salted shio daifuku, and tender warabi mochi, letting you mix and match as your mood strikes.
Orders are placed face-to-face with the staff, who wrap your selections on the spot. Payment is cash only, so having yen ready beforehand is wise. You can enjoy your purchases right away on the bench outside or bring them home for tea time—either way, it makes a practical stop on a walk through Yanesen.
